Critical Timing Rules for Spain NLV Renewal

Do not wait until it expires. Spanish law also accepts applications up to three months after expiry, but a late filing can trigger a sanction procedure (fine). Do not use this as a buffer.

Do I need to leave Spain to renew my NLV?
No — this is one of the key differences between the original application and renewal. The initial NLV application must be submitted at a Spanish consulate in your home country. Your Spain non lucrative visa renewal is submitted in Spain at your local Oficina de Extranjería. You do not need to leave the country.
How long does Spain NLV renewal take to process?
The Oficina de Extranjería has up to 90 days to process a renewal, but in practice renewals are often processed within 4–8 weeks depending on the office and current workload. If you submit before your current permit expires, you remain in legal status throughout the processing period — your permit is considered automatically extended by law during the processing time.
What income do I need for Spain NLV renewal?
The income requirement for renewal uses the same monthly rate as the original application — 400% of the monthly IPREM for you and 100% for each family member (RD 1155/2024, art. 62.1) — but it is calculated over the two-year length of the renewed authorisation (arts. 62.2, 64.2.b and 64.7). In 2026 the two-year requirement is €57,600 for a single applicant, €72,000 for a couple, €86,400 for a couple with one child and €100,800 with two children. That is the amount your evidence must cover — not a sum you must hold in cash. You can meet it with a regular income at the monthly rate (€2,400 plus €600 per family member), with savings or other assets, or with a combination (art. 62.1 and 62.3). The figures use an IPREM of €600 a month: the amount set by Ley 31/2022, Disposición adicional nonagésima (BOE-A-2022-22128), which still applies in 2026 because no later state budget has been approved (checked 17 October 2026). You will need to demonstrate continued passive income through bank statements, pension letters, or investment income documentation.
Can my whole family renew at the same time?
Yes. If you applied as a family originally, you can renew as a family together at your local Oficina de Extranjería. Each family member needs to be included in the renewal application with their own supporting documents (health insurance, identification). Combined household income is assessed together, not individually per person.
What if I let my NLV expire without renewing?
Allowing your NLV to expire without renewing puts your legal residency status at risk. While you can still apply up to three months after expiry, a late filing can lead to a sanction procedure and should never be relied upon.
