A spouse or registered civil partner can always join the lead applicant's non lucrative visa Spain family application. Unmarried children under 18 can also be included, and so can an unregistered partner in a stable relationship. Children over 18 can be included if they have a disability that requires support or cannot provide for themselves because of their health. Parents are not family members for the non-lucrative route — a parent would apply for their own NLV.

The income requirement for the Spain NLV family application increases for each additional family member. The threshold is approximately €2,400/month for the lead applicant, plus approximately €600/month per additional family member included. These figures are linked to the Spanish IPREM indicator and are updated annually. A couple would need approximately €3,000/month; a family of four approximately €4,200/month.

Children typically need their birth certificate (apostilled and translated into Spanish), a valid passport, proof of private health insurance compliant with Spanish NLV requirements, and a recent passport photo. For older children, some consulates also request school enrolment letters or academic records. The exact requirements vary by consulate — your case manager will provide a tailored document checklist for each family member.

Each applicant must apply at the Spanish consulate with jurisdiction over their area of residence. If family members are living in different countries or different consulate jurisdictions, they may need to submit their applications to different consulates. If one family member's application is refused while others are approved, that person cannot travel to Spain on the NLV. Children included in a family NLV application may attend school in Spain — in fact, school-age children are typically required to enrol in education after arriving. However, the NLV does not permit working for a Spanish employer. Children who reach working age while in Spain on the NLV cannot take up employment without changing their visa status.

Unmarried partners who are not in a registered civil partnership face a harder route on the NLV. Spanish immigration law recognises married spouses and registered civil partners as eligible family members for joint applications.
