Your Health & Your Policy
Pre-Existing Conditions and NLV Health Insurance
Here is how your health declaration is assessed, what the possible outcomes mean for your visa, and how to find out before you commit to a date.
How It Works
How Pre-Existing Conditions Are Assessed
Every application includes a health declaration. The insurer decides whether it can offer cover and on what terms.
Accepted on standard terms
Cover is offered with no changes.
Accepted with an exclusion
Cover applies to everything except a specific condition.
Additional premium or condition
A condition may be accepted with an extra premium or a restriction.
More information requested
You may be asked for reports before a decision.
Alternative offered
Another policy may be offered instead.
Declined
Cover may not be offered — which is why it’s worth asking before you rely on a date.
Your Health Declaration
Declare Everything — for Every Person
Answer the health questions fully for everyone on the policy. Non-disclosure, even by accident, can lead to refused claims or cancelled cover — the last thing you want after moving to Spain.
Have this ready
- the diagnosis and roughly when it was made
- current medication and treatment
- recent tests, operations or hospital stays
- anything still under investigation
For Your Visa
What an Exclusion Means for Your NLV
The consulate looks for full medical cover in Spain with no copayments. An exclusion for one condition doesn’t necessarily disqualify an otherwise compliant policy, but borderline cases exist — so ask before you apply, not the week before your appointment.
Start early: if the insurer needs more information, the extra time keeps your plans on track.

Common Questions
Questions We Hear Every Day
Can I get NLV health insurance with a pre-existing condition?
The insurer decides whether it can offer cover and on what terms Outcomes include acceptance on standard terms, acceptance with an exclusion or condition, an additional premium, a request for more information, or a decline. An exclusion may affect suitability for your visa; confirm the position before relying on the policy.
Does an exclusion stop my policy being accepted for the visa?
It may. An exclusion may affect suitability for your visa, so confirm the position before relying on the policy. Tell us about your situation before you apply and we’ll explain what the outcome would mean for your application.
What happens if I don’t declare a condition?
Non-disclosure — even by accident — can lead to refused claims or cancelled cover. Answer the health questions fully for every person.
What should I have ready?
The diagnosis and roughly when it was made, current medication and treatment, and any recent tests or hospital stays. You can mention them on the quote form.
